Bret Saberhagen began his baseball career by signing a big league contract out of high school in 1982 and spending only one year in the minor leagues. Bret went on to pitch 18 years in the Major Leagues with the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox. Bret accumulated two Cy Young Awards, a Gold Glove Award, MVP of the 1985 World Series and twice was awarded Come Back Player of the Year.
Retiring in 2001 Saberhagen returned to Southern California, where he settled in the area he grew up. The father of three, he has spent time enjoying the pleasure of his children and watching his two sons play the sport that has been his life.
After helping to coach his oldest son’s high school team over the last several years, he accepted the head coaching position in a volunteer capacity. Being able to help develop the baseball skills of the young men he worked with, inspired him in a new direction. He wanted to share his baseball knowledge but also help other youth and children’s organizations.
Bret created The Make A Difference Foundation to help raise funds to support charities and organizations dedicated to young people. Selecting different youth groups each year, Bret's focal point began with Juvenile Diabetes and the local baseball program. By having a Casino Night each year and his Annual Golf Classic Tournament, Dinner and Silent/Live Auction since 2004, he has helped to accomplish financial donations to those goals. Bret will tell you, “Giving back to the youth community keeps me in the game, the game of life.” |
